The way this section handles time is genuinely impressive. Three years pass. THREE. And the author doesn't just say 'three years passed' and move on — we get the texture of those years. The early mornings at Mao hour. Lin Ziyuan nagging her about slacking. The snacks she hoarded. The friendships she made. The way she'd stretch out 'in all directions' the moment she got back to her quarters. It reads like a slow burn of contentment, and that's what makes the ending so effective. 'But such idyllic days were soon coming to an end.' That sentence hits differently because we've actually LIVED those three years with her. We know what she's about to lose. The structure here is basically: establish danger (Xiao Wenjing exists) → remove danger (he's absent for a month) → establish routine (three years of peace) → hint at return (he showed up once at New Year) → confirm return (he's back for the trial) → confrontation imminent. And that last line? 'Currently, Ding Li's impression of Xiao Wenjing was rather complicated. On one hand, she felt that the two of them di...' CUT OFF. The author just leaves us hanging mid-thought. I had to immediately open the next chapter. Also worth noting: the author deliberately leaves gaps in the narrative. Things 'not detailed or only briefly mentioned' in the original story become full experiences here. This meta-awareness of how fiction works vs how life works is such a smart structural choice.
