'Do you have a girl you like?' That's it. That's the line. Four words from Wen Mingyao and the entire emotional architecture of this scene collapses. What I love about this dialogue is how understated everything is. Mother Zhou is doing all that emotional manipulation on the phone—'you should know in your heart how Dad has treated you'—and it's so obviously loaded, so clearly a guilt trip disguised as wisdom. But then Wen Mingyao just... swallows her retort. You can feel her biting back every sharp thing she wants to say, and the silence is louder than any argument would have been. Zhou Zhuo's dialogue is even more interesting because of what he doesn't say. When he hangs up on his mother, he doesn't explain anything to Wen Mingyao. He just says 'Let's go home.' And later, when she asks him about the girl, his response is this flat, almost defensive 'No!'—and then the narrative tells us that hearing this should make her happy, but it doesn't, because the implication is that if he doesn't like anyone, he definitely doesn't like her. The most devastating exchange is probably the last one before Chapter 12. She says 'Because it's not just you who doesn't want a child. I don't want one either.' And he walks away faster. The subtext is screaming: she doesn't want a child with him. That's the real wound, and neither of them can name it out loud.
