Love the story except I wish he wasn't Brendon. It would serve him justice since he's been a devil to her all that time if after she gets her face fixed and eyes healed that she walks away from him. Plus he's been lying to her all this time.

with so many repeated concepts and all the stupid characters, I am at a loss! He was stupid, she was stupid and Donovan was an ass . Daciana was probably the best character. This book was horrible!

The pacing in these chapters is absolutely masterful and I have to unpack why. We open with immediate tension—Fengxue confronting the two youths, hanging them off a cliff, then turning her full attention to Feng Fuliu. The confrontation is sharp, fast, almost comedic with the wooden sword reveal and the 'may you grow old together' blessing. It's got this percussive quality, like a series of quick strikes. Then Fuliu offers her the sword Fuwei, and for a moment it slows down. There's this quiet exchange where Fuliu says 'no one will ever cherish you' and Fengxue fires back with the parents line. Fuliu cries. The scene ends. And then—chapter break. We cut to the two youths hanging there, getting bird-pooped on, wailing. The tonal shift is hilarious but it also gives the reader a breath. It's comedic relief after heavy emotional beats. Then Fuliu appears and they all cry together. This is the author letting us exhale. But then Chapter 4 starts and the pacing goes WILD. Fengxue rides the wind. The prose opens up, becomes expansive, lyrical. We get this whole exposition dump about Qingming Mountain's rules and philosophy, but it's woven into her flight—she's literally rising above the mountain as she learns about it. And then the mood shifts AGAIN when she remembers she's tainted by demonic qi and will slowly become a demon. The wind-riding fails, she falls, and we end on a quiet note landing in a green hillside with sheep. From high tension to comedy to grief to freedom to dread—that's five emotional movements in two chapters and it never feels rushed. The author knows exactly when to accelerate and when to let the reader breathe.
