Okay so let me just say this out loud because I cannot get over what I just read. The Emperor Taiyong is genuinely one of the most despicable men in fiction and I love it. The way the plot slowly unravels through Eunuch Fang's report is *chef's kiss*. You start with this seemingly straightforward story about Noble Concubine Rou losing a pregnancy, and then it just keeps going and going—like peeling an onion made of pure betrayal. First the maidservant collides with Rou and causes a miscarriage at five months (a FULLY FORMED FETUS, which is already horrific enough), then the maidservant commits suicide, and then we find out that Noble Consort Qi—yes, the same Qi who is now raising the First Princess—actually miscarried her OWN child while taking care of Rou. The implication? Qi was the real mastermind behind the first miscarriage, and Rou took revenge by somehow causing Qi to lose her pregnancy. And the Emperor? He KNEW. He just sat there and let it all happen, then had the audacity to order his former wife (now demoted to concubine) to personally raise his concubine's daughter. This is not a man. This is a monster wrapped in imperial robes. And the best part is how Fu Lingxi pieces it together herself—she doesn't just accept Fang's report at face value, she reads between the lines like the cultivator she is. The plot doesn't hold your hand; it trusts you to connect the dots. That's rare. Most authors would just spell it out, but here we get to watch a smart protagonist do the work. The narrative structure here is tight—every piece of information Fang reveals raises more questions than it answers, which is exactly how you keep someone turning pages at 2 AM.
