I have to talk about the writing style here because it's genuinely exceptional. The author has this incredible ability to make the narration feel both literary and accessible, and the dialogue—when there is dialogue—feels completely natural for each character. Let me give you an example. When Shiliu comes to deliver Madam Wang's invitation, she says: "This servant greets Young Lady Cousin. Hearing that your health has improved, Madam has been thinking of you constantly. She has specially sent me to invite you to Fuxi Hall for a chat." On the surface, this is just polite servant speech. But read it again and you'll notice something: Shiliu is performing kindness. She's warm, she's deferential, she's observant—she 'discreetly observed Shen Yunshuang' and noted her beauty. This is a woman who has spent her life navigating the politics of a noble household, and every word she speaks is calculated. The author doesn't tell us this directly; she lets the dialogue do the work. And the narrative voice itself—there's this gorgeous quality to it, especially in the flashback sequences. Sentences like 'The pain finally disappeared. But the resentment in her heart remained' have this stark, almost poetic simplicity that sticks with you. The author knows when to be restrained and when to let the prose swell with emotion. One thing I really appreciate is how the author handles Shen Yunshuang's internal voice versus her external performance. When she's interacting with Shiliu and Madam Wang, her dialogue is polite, measured, appropriately deferential. But inside her head, she's a woman who has lived through death and spent years as a vengeful ghost. That gap between what she says and what she thinks is where the real tension lives, and the author writes it with such subtlety that you feel every unspoken word. The prose style reminds me a lot of classic Chinese family drama novels but with a modern sensibility. It's elegant without being pretentious, emotional without being melodramatic.
