Okay so let me just say—this section is a masterclass in how to make a financial audit scene actually dramatic. I know, I know, accounts? Really? But the way the author pivots from Shen Zhaoli's emotional reunion with Zhou Qingyun straight into Xie Yuheng discovering his household is bankrupt? Chilling. Absolutely chilling. The plot threads here are braiding together so tightly. On one side, you have Shen Zhaoli making the monumental decision to marry into Beiliang—volunteering, no less. She frames it as duty, as sacrifice for the nation. But the subtext? She's running. She's running from Xie Yuheng, from the mess she made of her life chasing him. And Zhou Qingyun sees right through it, which is why she delivers that line about Xie Yuheng being the one who failed to appreciate kindness. Then cut to Xie Yuheng's mansion imploding from within. The account books reveal everything—four thousand taels monthly expenses against a thousand-tael salary. The household is drowning. And the servants? They were all Princess Changle's people, carefully selected, professionally trained, and now they're walking out because Old Madam Xie called them thieves. The real plot twist isn't the debt. It's that Xie Yuheng has been living above his means this whole time, probably subsidized by Shen Zhaoli all along, and he never bothered to check.
