Wonderful story line, good book. Love it
The dialogue in these chapters is absolutely razor-sharp and I need to highlight some of my favorites. First, Shen Wan's line to Yan Xiao after he threatens her: 'And what's the consequence of opposing you? Are you going to kill me?' She says this with a smile, completely calm, and it's both a challenge and a test. She's daring him to reveal his true nature. And his response—'I'm the only one who's good to you. This isn't your first time opposing me, Shen Wan. If I really wanted to kill you, would you still be sitting here?'—this is Yan Xiao at his most dangerous and most vulnerable. He's admitting that his threats are partly performative, that he wants her to understand he's not actually trying to destroy her. Then there's the line that got me: 'Shen Wan, I really want to know when will you finally ask me once?' What does he mean by 'ask'? Ask for what? His love? Her compliance? It's deliberately vague and that ambiguity is so powerful. And Shen Wan's reply—'What power do I have? Enough to make you lose sleep over me?'—she deflects with a question, turns his own words back on him, and maintains her position without ever raising her voice. The dialogue between these two is basically a martial art. Every sentence is a parry and a thrust, and neither will yield. Yan Xiao's voice is commanding, sometimes gentle, always layered with something underneath. Shen Wan's is deceptively soft—'flowing like a gentle river' as the narration says—but underneath that river is bedrock.
This was a good book! An emotional rollercoaster ride for sure. 10/10 recommend it to everyone!

Killian is so frustrating! I almost wish Natalie would just mount him in her sleep. ... He better straighten up and fly right before he loses her completely.
