It's the most frustrating romantic setup and I can't look away. Then on the other hand, there's Captain Lu Shijing, who has this quiet, steady presence. He trusts her completely, doesn't question her judgments, and there's something in the way he watches her work that feels like it could go somewhere. The author is setting up a proper love triangle without either man even knowing the other exists, and the timing is perfect because the disabled son Ye Yunzhou just walked into the picture. I'm not saying Qiao Huan is going to end up with any of them, but the emotional landscape is already rich and complicated. What I find most touching is how Qiao Huan carries her past life—the apocalypse, the zombies, the numbness she developed from seeing too many corpses. She's survived something horrific and yet she's still capable of hope, of wanting love, of wanting a normal life. That's the real emotional core of this story. Not the romance, not the mystery, but a woman who's seen the end of the world and still believes in starting over.
I need to talk about the sugar-coated haws scene because my heart literally broke a little. Da Ya and Gou Dan are standing there, eyes locked on those glistening red treats, and Gou Dan has a literal droplet of saliva at the corner of his mouth 'sparkling in the sun.' I'm not even exaggerating. And then they both simultaneously turn away and say 'I won't eat! It's inedible! Too much money wasted!' while absolutely starving for it. The fact that they're both doing this performance for each other and for Lin Yue—like they're competing to be the more responsible one—this is the kind of detail that makes me want to hug these kids through the page. And then Lin Yue makes the deal: sell out and they get two sticks. Their immediate response is 'just one stick for the two of us is enough!' One stick. They're offering to split one stick. I'm not okay. This isn't just 'poor kids are cute.' This is a portrait of children who have internalized scarcity so deeply that even a small treat feels like a luxury they shouldn't indulge in. But here's what really got me—the woodcutter. His wife made him a table overnight because she guessed Lin Yue would need it. That's the kind of domestic warmth that doesn't need grand gestures. He just shows up with this beautifully crafted table and says 'my wife said you might forget tools.' No fanfare, no expectation of repayment. Grammer is Good. It's a new story so I don't have much to say. The start was both good and bad, with the shimmering lust already present in the first 10 chapters but I couldn't drop the book because of its potential. I love to see the author realise the books full potential in future.
