The author describes them with 'innocent smiles on their faces.' INNOCENT SMILES. While they're drowning a child. And the dialogue—oh god, the dialogue. 'Drown him!' 'Beat this stinking black element to death!' 'Brother Santou, are you done yet? It's my turn!' 'Let's make him drink our pee!' This isn't just a scene. This is a portrait of how ideology corrupts innocence. These aren't evil children. They're children who have absorbed the language of their parents and the politics of their time and weaponized it against someone smaller and weaker. And the worst part? The author makes you understand why this happened. The boy's family had been sent down when he was three. He'd already endured labor reform. This drowning attempt? 'It was just another ordinary day' for him. That line hit me like a truck. The scene itself is almost clinical in its description—no dramatic music, no internal monologue from Hehua until she's already sprinting. The horror is in the matter-of-factness of it.
