This book lives up to its title and description - light-hearted with no earth-shattering plot twists, but the narrative pace, writing style, and character development are executed admirably. The main character has a charm that gradually endears itself to readers. In essence, if the summary and title intrigue you, give it a try. If you find the first 20 chapters enjoyable, you'll likely thoroughly appreciate the rest of the story.
Have you ever come across a book that feels personally written just for you? Despite any flaws, it resonates with your interests, featuring a vibrant and strong female character, a cool yet compassionate male lead, a gradual and well-developed romance, friendships, and humorous moments. The protagonist is likable and relatable, driven by her ambitions. She takes responsibility for her brother's actions, which endangered soldiers and led to violence, and her determination pushes her to regain strength and join the army to expose the impostor general.
While the concept of a woman hiding her gender among soldiers may be unrealistic, the story's core message about Mulan-style equality captivates me. The portrayal of a woman excelling in combat while maintaining her femininity, albeit unlikely, does not bother me.
The romance is not the central focus, offering a slow-burn buildup, so if you're seeking a light-hearted romance, this might not be your cup of tea. However, there are delightful romantic comedy scenes peppered throughout that bring a smile. The aloof男主角 eventually grows to respect and love the protagonist, with emotional scenes that tug at heartstrings, particularly when he understands the power of blending truth and deception.
In passing, I felt a twinge of sympathy for the second male character's outcome. The writing style is refreshingly devoid of excessive floridity, making the reading experience engaging and free of boredom.
Reading this text was quite distressing for me. Although I enjoy stories involving SM and yandere themes, I decided to give it a chance based on the positive reviews. However, my expectations were severely let down. Initially, the beginning held some intrigue, but it rapidly declined from there. I can't disagree with the criticisms expressed by other negative reviews. The main character (MC) is extremely unlikable, and while the male lead (ML) is decent, he displays a disturbing sexual obsession. Their relationship lacks genuine love or chemistry, and instead, it turns into abuse. Now, I'm generally fine with that kind of dynamic in fictional works, but the MC's personality pushed me to the brink of giving up. I managed to read only a few chapters, but the characters' personalities didn't gel, and the plot felt mediocre, lacking engagement. It's interesting to note that the author has written "Gu Fang Bu" or another title with similar dynamics, where the abusive relationships seem to be a recurring theme. I had hoped for an intense, possessive love story rather than one driven by physical attraction, which is how I perceive the MCs' dynamic. Overall, a significant disappointment.
I like how gender and bender are 2 separate genres
