Okay so I need to talk about this system task thing because honestly it is the engine driving the entire plot and I am obsessed with how cruel it is. Shu Xian keeps getting tasks from 006 that basically force him to destroy his relationships with the pursuers, and the worst part is he KNOWS it's wrong. He's internally screaming every time. The phone-smashing scene had me physically wincing. He picks up Li Wu's phone and smashes it, then delivers this line: "Without our family's status, do you think you could have known Gu Tingyuan?" And then he just hobbles upstairs like nothing happened while his toes are curling in shame. The narrative tension here is incredible because we're watching someone fight against their own storyline. Every task escalates — first it's smashing the phone, then it's calling Li Wu a "sissy waste," then the Fu Yichen line which is SO forced that even Shu Xian questions it. Who writes dialogue like "You only know Fu Yichen because of the Shu family connection" when they barely know each other? The plot is basically a pressure cooker and I can't look away. It makes me wonder how many more of these tasks are coming and whether Shu Xian will eventually rebel or if the system will break him. Also the fact that he somehow manages to befriend Fu Yichen AND Jian Fang while simultaneously being forced to sabotage Li Wu — that's three out of four pursuers won over while the plot actively works against him. That's some next-level dramatic irony.
I love all these books and have been patiently waiting for Ravens book since book 2!!! I can’t wait to see how this all plays out.
