The chapter ends with them surrounded by zombies, car screeching, and I literally had to put the book down for a second because my heart was pounding. That's the mark of good pacing—it makes you feel physically affected. What's interesting is how the author balances action with breathing room. Right when things get too intense, we get these moments: the baby-faced man complaining about his hair, Xie Ning's internal monologue about twenty years ago, the brief exchange with He Zhi about ability awakening. These aren't filler—they're punctuation marks in a story that's sprinting the whole time. The cliffhanger structure is also on point. Each mini-scene ends with a question or a threat: Will Ma Yu survive the fire? Can Xie Ning reach her cousin in time? What's wrong with her fever not going away? Honestly, the only complaint I have is that it ended. Seven chapters and I'm already obsessed. The author knows exactly how to keep you turning pages.
