Phoebus_Aphos
This opening is a masterclass in controlled chaos. The author doesn't waste a single paragraph. We go from Xie Ning waking up with a fever to being pushed toward death in the first few lines, and then—bam—she's fighting back, setting her best friend on fire, and driving through an apocalypse all before I've had time to process what just happened. The pacing is relentless but never confusing. Each scene flows into the next like a domino effect: betrayal → survival → rescue → escape. The chapter ends with them surrounded by zombies, car screeching, and I literally had to put the book down for a second because my heart was pounding. That's the mark of good pacing—it makes you feel physically affected. What's interesting is how the author balances action with breathing room. Right when things get too intense, we get these moments: the baby-faced man complaining about his hair, Xie Ning's internal monologue about twenty years ago, the brief exchange with He Zhi about ability awakening. These aren't filler—they're punctuation marks in a story that's sprinting the whole time. The cliffhanger structure is also on point. Each mini-scene ends with a question or a threat: Will Ma Yu survive the fire? Can Xie Ning reach her cousin in time? What's wrong with her fever not going away? By the end, we're hooked not just on the plot but on the mystery of Xie Ning's power and her past life. And the driving scene—'Sis, didn't you just pass Subject Two?'—is such a perfect tonal shift. One moment they're surrounded by zombies, the next they're making dark humor about driving skills. It's human. It's real. And it keeps the story from becoming one-note action porn. Honestly, the only complaint I have is that it ended. Seven chapters and I'm already obsessed. The author knows exactly how to keep you turning pages.
Love it but too expensive.
