That's not just a plan—that's a declaration of war against narrative itself. And the stakes are enormous because if he fails, he doesn't just die. He gets rewritten back into the story. What's fascinating is how the author layers the conflicts. There's the external conflict with the rat demon (which is resolved quickly, almost comically). There's the social conflict with Su Qinghe (who represents the sect's existing power structure). There's the interpersonal conflict with Lu Xiaobai (who is both enemy and someone Lin Ji feels inexplicably drawn to). And then there's the internal conflict—the one that's most interesting. Lin Ji keeps asking himself 'Why was this damned fate toying with him once more?' He's not just fighting against other characters. He's fighting against the idea that his life is predetermined. The moment that raised the stakes highest for me was when Lin Ji realizes he doesn't actually know who Lu Xiaobai is yet. 'Lu Xiaobai, at this moment, had no idea what kind of person he was.' This is the calm before the storm. The protagonist doesn't know he's being targeted. The reader knows. And that dramatic irony creates this unbearable tension—every friendly interaction between them is loaded with meaning that only Lin Ji understands. What happens when Lu Xiaobai finds out? What happens when he becomes the cold, calculating person from Lin Ji's memories? I'm genuinely anxious now.
