This is a nine-year-old girl declaring her life ambitions and her mother responding with love and a promise of better food. The dialogue is natural, age-appropriate, and full of warmth. Honghua's voice is distinct — she's loud, ambitious, unapologetic. Mother Nie's voice is practical and tender. Even Father Nie has a distinct voice when he's whispering with his wife about tuition costs and they quickly run out of ideas and agree to ask around the next day. That's how real couples talk. And the narrative voice! The author has this wonderful dry humor woven into the narration. When Nie Qinghe thinks about her plan to fake being sick to send less money home and expose her grandparents, the narration just lays it out matter-of-factly. Old Madam Nie might have brainwashed him, but Nie Qinghe could slowly set things right. No moralizing, no dramatic music, just cold strategic thinking from a girl who has survived two years of emotional manipulation. The contrast between the warm family scenes and Qinghe's calculating inner monologue creates this incredible narrative tension.
The whispering villagers. The SPECIFIC whisper. I cannot get over this scene. Xiao Yu is just trying to walk around and gather information and these people are literally gossiping about him like he's some kind of celebrity. And then they say it— "Could it be... that he's the Chieftain's captive husband?" I literally screamed. Xiao Yu nearly loses his composure right there. The embarrassment, the shock, the sheer absurdity of it all—this is comedy gold wrapped in tension. But here's what I love: it's not JUST funny. It's also deeply unsettling for Xiao Yu because now he has to navigate this whole situation where the bandits might actually be trying to MARRY him off. The power dynamics are completely flipped. He's the one captured, drugged, and now apparently considered marriage material. Meanwhile the Chieftain is just... out there somewhere, reading books and plotting, completely in control. And the fact that the stronghold has prepared for a PROLONGED siege—hidden underground granaries, secret mountain paths, women and children continuing to farm—this shows a level of organization that makes the Chieftain feel like a genuine strategic threat, not just some romantic interest. The tension between the military plot and this weird romantic implication is SO good.

I also loved the small detail about her packing his luggage the night before he left, tucking silver into the inner lining. She is being careful and thoughtful, making sure he has money only when he reaches a safe place. That is the kind of daughter she wants to be, and it shows how much she has grown since taking over the original character's body. The family bond between Liu Zhiheng, her father, and her younger brother is the emotional anchor of this story. Everything she is doing - breaking off the engagement, trying to protect her family, sending her brother back to school - it all comes from this deep love for the people around her. It is not about romance or power or revenge. It is about survival and family. And that makes every decision she makes feel so much more meaningful.
The stakes in this passage are ridiculous and I love it. Let me count: Zhang Guihua wants her son to marry well and is spreading lies because she lost out. Liu Fulang wants the same thing and is losing his mind about it. Li Jian is a spoiled kid who thinks he can just snatch what he wants. The old woman wants Pei Mu dead or exiled because her son died and she needs someone to blame. Matchmaker Feng wants to close the deal and get paid. Sun Yunniang wants to secure her son's future. Pei Mu wants to get this over with and return to his isolated life. And Zhong Yizhu — he wants... what? He sits on his clothes chest and listens to his life being decided, then steps out and claims agency. But at what cost? Every conflict here is pressing on him simultaneously. The villagers are a pack of hyenas circling. The old woman's accusation of 'forced marriage' is dangerous — if the village chief believes her, the whole arrangement could collapse. And Pei Mu's response to that threat is... well, 'you will too' — a death threat against a grieving mother. That's not protection, that's escalation. The tension between what Pei Mu claims (this was all proper, consensual, customary) and what the villagers see (a feared recluse sweeping in and taking a city boy) is the central conflict. And the wedding date being set for half a month from now means there's no time to back out, no time to cool down, no time for anyone to change their mind. The author has built a pressure cooker and lit the fuse. I am not ready for what happens next.

The MC is well-developed, and the side characters are given sufficient attention. The MC thinks things through before acting, which is a relief as I hate stupid MCs.World Background: Everything is explained just right, not too much not too little.I could write some more about how MC does this and that. But that would take away from you just reading it for yourself.

Awesome. I finally found a new novel that makes me excited. I hope the system shop has something to help his first wife become more beautiful and increase her talent so she can cultivate. Also can the author please limit the number of wives he will have. I mean, having too many wives ain't too good either and it will be kinda frustrating for character development. Anyway all the best
