That 'hmph' alone tells you everything about her character. And then there's Xu Huaian, who goes from this serious military man in the forest to a complete simp the second he's alone with her. 'Qingqian, I miss you too much. Tomorrow we'll officially hold the wedding banquet. I'm restless—if I don't see you, I can't sleep.' Bro, you're married, just go to bed. But that's the thing—his dialogue feels so genuine, like a guy who's genuinely head-over-heels and can't hide it. The banter between them is effortless. 'You smooth talker. Where did you learn that line?' 'Qingqian, I didn't learn it. It's straight from my heart.' I'm dead. Also, the villagers' dialogue during the feast is surprisingly vivid—'This is Xifeng wine, very famous. I've heard of it but never tasted it.' It grounds the story in its time period without feeling like a history textbook. And Liu Feifei's line 'Village weddings can't compare to the city' is such a perfect villain quote. She's not even trying to be subtle about her jealousy.
I need to talk about Cheng Denglin because this chapter absolutely breaks my heart for him. Here's this man who has spent his entire life trying to be a good son, a good brother, a good husband — and he was being manipulated by his own family the whole time. The scene where he sits by Jiang Nan's bedside and actually SEEES her for the first time? 'When had his beautiful, lively wife become so thin and worn?' He thought her decline was just natural aging. But what really got me was his relationship with his kids. Lu Xiaoxiao and Lu Mingsheng — raised by HIM and Jiang Nan, treated like their own — and they attacked Jiang Nan without a second thought. Meanwhile Cheng Hao, his own son, just hid in the corner watching. The betrayal cuts in both directions. And then Cheng Denglin whipping Cheng Hao with a belt? I know it's supposed to be discipline, but man, this man is surrounded by people who solve everything with violence or manipulation. He's not a bad person — he's just trapped in a family system that rewards cruelty. His plea to his mother to take care of Jiang Nan for half a month shows he's trying, really trying, to make things right. But can he actually break free from his family's influence? That's the real question. Jiang Nan's relationship with Cheng Hao is fascinating too. She's brutally honest with him — 'you'll only be leeching off your dad' — but she's also planning how to protect him from the psychological damage of the divorce. That's not someone who doesn't care. That's someone who cares in a very practical, no-nonsense way.
