I enjoyed reading Born. It's well-written and faced paced, exactly how I prefer my YA's. Can't wait to read more from this author.
"So eager for me to touch you, is that it? Hmm?" — I need to talk about this opening scene because it completely encapsulates the toxic dance between these two. Gu Cheng'an kisses Sheng Xia not out of affection but as punishment, and yet the moment their lips meet he loses control. He's so confused by this new version of her—cold, biting, refusing to be touched—that his rage and desire are tangled up in ways he can't even process. Remember the Li Shengxia who used to cling to him? The one who always tried to take advantage? This new Sheng Xia is his opposite in every way, and that's apparently what's driving him absolutely crazy. But here's what really got me: the divorce negotiation that follows. Sheng Xia puts on this performative act—calling him "Mr. Gu," flattering herself into nothingness, acting like she's doing him a favor by leaving. And Gu Cheng'an? He sees right through it but plays along anyway. Their dialogue is this incredible back-and-forth where neither person is saying what they actually mean. She says "I love you so much, I adore you—how could I ever bear to leave you?" while internally calling him a bastard miser. He says "I'll grant your wish" while setting up a financial trap that would destroy her. This is a marriage where everyone is performing and nobody is honest, and that's what makes it so electric to read. The relationship with Shen Xinhe is a completely different flavor. Gu Cheng'an goes from cold and calculating with his wife to gentle and protective with this waitress in minutes. It's almost comical how quickly he shifts. And Sheng Xia watching this transformation from the sidelines—trying not to interfere, secretly hoping it happens, then feeling that pang of bitterness when she realizes he really does care—this is the most painful kind of love triangle because she's complicit in her own heartbreak.
