There's a lot happening beneath the surface of this text, and I want to talk about the symbols because they're doing incredible work. The Longevity Lock. This object opens the entire batch. The Hong family thought it was protecting their baby — it was actually hastening his death. The lock, meant to secure longevity, became an instrument of death. This is the central paradox of the story: things that appear to protect can actually harm, and things that appear worthless can save. Xiao Ling Bao's SpongeBob drawing is the perfect counter-symbol — something that looks like a child's scribble but carries genuine spiritual power. The lock was ornate, expensive, and deadly. The drawing is crude, free, and life-giving. Which one do you think the Hong family ends up framing? Then there's the dress. Pearl's meltdown isn't really about a dress — it's about identity theft on a cosmic level. That white sparkly dress was supposed to be HER thing, the marker of her specialness. When Xiao Ling Bao wears it, it's not just fashion envy — it's the visual confirmation that everything Pearl thought she knew about her place in the world is a lie. The dress is a symbol of status, and its transfer from Pearl's imagined wardrobe to Xiao Ling Bao's tiny frame represents the complete reversal of their fates. And names! This is the biggest theme of all. 'Wang Xiaoni' vs. 'Ling Ziqi' vs. 'Little Mud' vs. 'Xiao Ling Bao.' Each name represents a different identity, a different story being told about the same child. The Wang family named her 'Little Mud' — something worthless, something to be discarded. The Ling family named her 'Ziqi' — a name of elegance and promise. Her uncles call her 'Xiao Ling Bao' — something warm, familial, beloved. And now Yin Xuetong is weaponizing the old name in front of the entire class, trying to drag her back into the mud. The question the text keeps asking is: which name is the true one? And the answer, I think, is all of them — because identity isn't a single thing, it's a layering of stories.
