I keep coming back to this one moment and I can't stop thinking about it. She feels flustered, oddly nervous. And then he says 'Focus' and his voice is cold but she's the one whose ears are burning. This is the kind of subtle romantic tension that doesn't need grand declarations — it's in the physical proximity, the whispered words meant only for her, the way he smiles faintly when she declares 'Ten rings!' and then relaxes his grip to let her succeed on her own terms. The author doesn't spell it out at all. There's no confession, no hand-holding, just these tiny charged moments that accumulate. Like when she visits him after the assassination and he's reclining under a fur blanket, casually telling her to bring him his coat like she's already part of his daily routine. And she stays for dinner because the fish soup smells irresistible and suddenly she's remembering sneaking meals here in the past. The warmth of that study contrasting with the cold outdoors — it's not just physical warmth, is it? She's been avoiding him since the palace attack because her low status gave her no excuse to visit, and now she's sitting across from him in his private space, and he's letting her stay without even really acknowledging why she came. I'm not okay.
The tricky part with Kallen in this story is that, if she is to become what all of you believe to be the Zero of this story, she needs to take on an actual leadership role. In the canon anime she never actually led beyond the small unit level, she never made any strategic decisions so to speak. It was always someone else pointing her at an enemy. If she is to become Zero, as some of you keep speculating, she has to start making decisions for herself. If she becomes Zero, that is. I'll leave the direction I'm taking with her open to speculation.
