Perfect story
I have to talk about this one moment because it completely wrecked me in the best way. Chen Tang asks Fu Tingyuan 'did you drink?' and then immediately calls her own question 'useless' because she's trying so hard to act like she doesn't care. But then her face gets hot and she tells him to go take a shower and pretends to memorize her script while clearly being completely flustered. This is the emotional core of their entire relationship right there - she says she wants distance, she says she wants to draw clear lines, but her body and her emotions keep betraying her. The line 'I thought you were worried about me. So you're saying you just asked a useless question?' from Fu Tingyuan is devastating because he's so gently calling out her performance. He's not angry, he's not pushing, he's just... seeing her. And that's somehow more intimate than any grand romantic gesture could be. What's beautiful about this scene is that it's so small. There's no dramatic confession, no grand romantic moment. Just a drunk husband coming home, a wife who's pretending not to care, and the tiny cracks that appear in the armor. The alcohol smell is almost a metaphor here - it's something Chen Tang can't ignore, something that permeates the space between them no matter how hard she tries to focus on her script. And Fu Tingyuan's teasing response 'Then next time I'll drink more so you can worry about me?' is actually incredibly sweet when you think about it. He's essentially saying 'I know you care, and I'm not going to punish you for it.' The emotional complexity here is remarkable - Chen Tang genuinely wants independence, she genuinely wants to succeed on her own merits, but she also genuinely cares about this man and it keeps coming out in these tiny moments. Her internal sigh about not being able to draw a complete line is one of the most honest emotional moments in the entire passage. She's not angry at him, she's not angry at herself, she's just... accepting reality. And that acceptance is somehow more emotionally powerful than any dramatic confrontation could have been. The scene ends with her about to sleep, the script and phone on the bedside table, and there's this quiet tenderness to it all that I'm still thinking about.
couldn't put it down till I finished. I hope this story line is continued in a 2nd book.
