it is flourishing
The visual contrast in these chapters is absolutely stunning. Let me paint you a picture: the prince's mansion is being decorated for a wedding that isn't Yu Zhu's. Red lanterns. Red carpets. Red plum blossoms replacing the wintersweet in her courtyard. Everything is red, everything is festive, and Yu Zhu is standing in the middle of it all, eating venison and wondering if she can invite her friend to the wedding. The scene where Prince Jin describes the wedding procession is practically cinematic. Eight bearers. Sandalwood sedan chair with golden bells. The red silk ribbon connecting the bride and groom. The suona horns and drums. It's so vivid you can hear it. And then—cut to Yu Zhu's courtyard, where the only red is the lanterns Nanny Gui ordered to be hung, and the only celebration is New Year's rice cakes made by a woman who doesn't matter enough to be invited to her own husband's wedding. I also love the sensory details throughout. The smoke stinging Yu Zhu's eyes. The warm yellow glow of candlelight on her face as she pounds rice cakes. The sweet, fragrant aroma of glutinous rice filling the air. The chrysanthemum tea prepared to cool the body after eating venison. These aren't just decorative details—they're the texture of the story. The world feels alive because every scene is anchored in physical sensation. You can taste the food, feel the cold wind, see the red everywhere. And that red? It's everywhere. It's the color of joy, but in this house, it's also the color of exclusion.
