I have really enjoyed this book as a whole… so far. I’m about 70% of the way into the story and find myself mostly happy with the book. I’m just wondering, why does the Prince have such a hang up about weight? It just seams a bit passive aggressive on the negative comments, and name calling.

Overall love the characters and overall story but it seems like the author is extending the story in areas unnecessarily. Things that characters knew then suddenly don’t and it feels like it drags on just to gain money not for the good of the story. Either that or characters are really stupid

I need to talk about how the dialogue in this chapter operates on three completely different frequencies simultaneously and somehow never feels cluttered. First, there's the intimate register between Qin Xiao and Qinghe. The whispered exchanges are where the real character work happens. "Call me that more often tonight. I like hearing it." — five words and you get a complete picture of this man. He's not some polished romantic lead reciting poetry, he's a guy who just wants his wife to say the word "husband" because it's something he's never had the privilege of claiming. And Qinghe's response, turning red and whispering back, that's not scripted romance, that's two people who are genuinely figuring each other out. Then there's the public register, and this is where the author's voice really shines. The shopkeeper's dialogue is perfectly calibrated — she's not a villain, she's just a middle-aged businesswoman who has seen too many men waste money on appearances. Her line about "spoiling a woman this much" isn't malicious, it's practical advice from someone who assumes everyone operates the way she does. And Qin Xiao's response — all bluster and then immediately deflating when Qinghe steps in — that's such a specific kind of male awkwardness that it made me laugh out loud. But the most interesting dialogue is the internal monologue. Qinghe thinking about how Qin Xiao checked his breath after kissing her but before kissing her mouth? That observation is so sharp and so tender at the same time. She noticed something he thought was hidden, and instead of calling him out, she used it as an opportunity to buy him toothbrushes. The fact that she figured out his insecurity about his breath before he did, and then helped him solve it without making him feel small — that's the kind of dialogue between two people who are already deeply attuned to each other. It's not about what they say, it's about what they notice.
