A story that is definitely in the top five fish-related novels on the site. Never skip the translator notes, as they are the highlights of each chapter. The worldbuilding is amazing as well - take a look at this example "After remolding goldfish hundreds of times, Chu Xian became quite good at it. It only took him three minutes to finish with one goldfish. Over two thousand goldfish should take more than six thousand minutes, equivalent to about a hundred hours. In the span of two days, Chu Xian remolded every single goldfish – the approximately 1500 ***** goldfish were ready to be sold, and the 700 or so babies were all reformed as a mask for his real operation." While in a pseudo-familiar modern world, the author constantly slips in information to tell the reader that everything is not as familiar as it seems. The fifty hour days result in a world that's familiar, but not too familiar, but not too not familiar. The level of research and worldbuilding is astounding as well - take a look at this section on his setting's equivalent of Chinatown. It's like you're stepping into a portal and seeing it firsthand. "Chu Xian got into a car and went to the Chinatown in New York. Chinatown was where Chinese Americans hung out in America, and 99% of the people there were Chinese. The streets decorated with Chinese things and the Chinese restaurants lining the sides of the streets gave Chu Xian a cozy feeling." And, while the update speed has been irritating fast recently, I won't take off stars for that.
I bought Membership for the first time on Webnovel just to further read this book. For context I have been on the site for around 5 years and I have over 1000 consecutive daily log ins for a streak right now. So that should say something in and of itself.As for actual details of the book, this novel has some of the best character development and world building on the site. The main character grows his personality in very realistic ways. He doesn't change completely in one crazy event, nor does he stay the same, but rather has a very natural growth as a person as he conquers the insane gauntlets that he is thrown into.The worlds that he experiences, of which there are more than one due to the nature of the story, are incredible. The author has a very unique gritty and fantastical imagination that has so far ensured that every single chapter has left me more curious about the universe that Sunny, the MC, has to challenge.This book has over 100 chapters now, and here is to hoping for 10000 more!
