I originally intended to give this novel a full 5-star rating, but the system's behavior is incredibly frustrating. The protagonist put in a lot of effort to accumulate life points, only to have them stolen unknowingly by the system for mysterious reasons. It would have been fine if it was for the host's benefit, but no, they used them for seemingly insignificant stuff.
The system even made purchases like eye drops, claiming, "I bought an eye drop because the drama is so emotional, and I cried a lot," and "I bought melon seeds because the host's scenes were highly entertaining." However, the protagonist only discovered the depletion of her points upon returning to reality, finding they barely covered an hour's worth, or sometimes just a day or two's sustenance.
When side quests cropped up, the main character didn't want to accept them, but the system would force it with laughter, revealing its deranged nature. That's when I stopped reading, at the point where the MC became an emperor and the ML, an ambitious official, tried to seize power.
Despite acknowledging that the storytelling itself is well-crafted, I still can't overlook my annoyance with the manipulative system.
This narrative serves as a unfortunate illustration of deeply ingrained misogyny in some aspects of Chinese culture, showcasing issues such as:
- Exploitation through wife trafficking
- Forced into a subservient role, expected to solely cater to her in-laws
- Being deprived of educational opportunities
- Blaming the female lead (FL) for any misfortunes
Despite being transplanted into this situation, the FL paradoxically develops feelings for her captors and neglects her own family. It's truly disheartening and unsettling.
In summary, I find this book quite enjoyable. I'd give it a 4.5, but that's just being苛刻. I wish the story delved a bit more into the mechanics of the transmigration, but given that it's not a common theme, it's not a significant issue. The relationship between the main characters is engaging, but I do get annoyed by their constant miscommunications. The MC is intelligent, so why doesn't he grasp the ML's emotions sooner? The length is perfect for a quick read, and the ending satisfies. My favorite part is the political intrigue, which balances nicely with the romantic elements. There are minimal plot holes that don't hinder the flow of the story. Overall, it's a lighthearted and entertaining read, easy to breeze through due to its concise nature. The translation is also commendable.

I dropped this after the cooking rice sht. The Author is writing this stupidity for the sake of mc cooking rice w/ a jade beauty. Goodness, I'm aware that I'm shallow on this part, hit sry Author? Everything was so good until this part.

Alongside the main duo, the narrative focuses on several other well-developed characters with their own individual journeys.
The story predominantly unfolds from the protagonist's perspective, occasionally shifting to third person. The straightforward language suits the story's tone, though it can feel abrupt when abruptly changing conversational topics. Humor, while present, can be misplaced in serious scenes but generally provides comic relief. The meat of the plot begins around chapter 130, with earlier chapters setting up key characters, world-building, and the buildup to the central conflict.
The English translation by Divine Dao Library is commendable, effectively handling honorific removal without compromising character interactions or consistency in terminology. Dialogue clarity is maintained, and emotions in critical scenes are conveyed, although cringe-worthy moments remain cringe-inducing. On the other hand, Estelion's Secret Imouto's older translation is subpar – their understanding of the text is questionable, and their English is poor, possibly relying on machine translation. Their adaptation attempts, by placing dialogue in manga panels, disrupt the reading experience and consume unnecessary bandwidth.
The novel also boasts a manga adaptation with stunning visuals, capturing virtually every detail. Though it progresses slowly, given its position within the second major arc, it's worth checking out alongside the text.
To me, at its core, this was an enchanting love narrative. It's rare to find a character like Qin Cheng in novels, who expresses his emotions so candidly and sincerely. His devotion to his beloved is无私, yet he兼具 wisdom and discernment. Despite believing his affection might be unrequited, he chooses to trust and believe in his love. The plot keeps readers hooked from start to finish, brimming with intrigue, suspense, and unexpected twists that maintain a perfect balance, preventing boredom or frustration. The reader is constantly eager to turn the pages, ultimately rewarded with a heartwarming conclusion. The author's attention to detail is commendable, as any questions or doubts, such as Qin Cheng's excessive love, are resolved by the story's progression. Translated fully, I'm certain this tale would resonate even more with audiences.
