He's all gruff exterior and soft interior and I am HERE for it. But the real gut punch for me was when Wen Jianing remembered what SHE used to say to him: 'You're just someone my parents picked up off the street to be my bodyguard! Without my permission, you're not allowed to leave my side!' And now the tables have turned so hard. She's the one who needs him, who instinctively reaches for his arm when she's scared, who calls him 'Brother' in this tiny soft voice that apparently does something to him. And his reaction when she pulls her hand away just before touching his sleeve — the text says 'irritation flared inside him' and then he unnecessarily punishes a recruit for wearing an undershirt. That's not about military discipline, bestie. That's a man who just got rejected by the person he's trying to take care of and he's taking it out on the world. The subtext is SCREAMING. Also the moment she calls him 'Brother' at the end — 'Her voice was tiny. Soft. Sweet.' and his fingers tighten around his chopsticks? He's trying so hard to maintain this cold commander persona but she literally just undoes him with one word. The dynamic between them is everything.
