Loved this entire series but this may have been my favorite. I loved the dynamics of triplets and multiple mates!
This author really knows how to make a setting feel alive. The courtyard where everyone lives is described in such specific, sensory detail that I could practically smell the coal smoke and hear the neighbors arguing through the walls. When Xu Zhizhi runs to Feng Jiao Jiao's house, the text mentions it's 'about a ten-minute walk' and she's 'sweating all over' because 'this body was too weak.' That single detail tells me so much about the physical reality of this era and this character's condition. The most vivid scene has to be the theft investigation in the courtyard. You've got neighbors coming out of their homes, eating still on their tables, all gathering to watch the drama unfold. Hu Xiuping rolling her eyes when Wang Laotai tries to claim they've never had anything stolen-"We've lost coal, soap... plenty of things." That line is genius because it establishes that this is a poor community where small thefts are a daily reality. It's not just Xu Zhizhi's problem; it's everyone's. Xu Zhizhi's room is described as 'neat and slightly fastidious' with 'modest belongings meticulously arranged.' This is Lu Yuchuan's first time seeing her room, and the fact that it's clean and organized tells us so much about her character without any exposition. She may be poor, but she takes pride in her space. The factory setting is also important-people live in company housing, there's a security office, and the community is tight-knit enough that everyone knows everyone's business. When Liu Chao goes to investigate and comes back with the stolen outline, the whole courtyard becomes this makeshift courtroom. The author doesn't need fancy descriptions; the simplicity of the setting makes it feel authentic.

If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would! Onyx Queen weaves stories of magical lands. Every chapter leaves you holding your breath for the next. When I see another chapter has been posted I rush to read it and get my fix. A wonderful read ...
