That's a proper plot twist that recontextualizes everything. The old man Liu chipping in about the shark's fin dish took half a year and cartloads of waste was the perfect supporting evidence. It wasn't just Lin Dan defending her dad's honor; it was witnesses corroborating decades of hard work. And then the whole challenge thing—Lin Dan turning the tables by challenging Yan Shouye instead of Yan Langqing? That was genius because she knew he couldn't even flip a wok. The author really played with dramatic irony here. We know Yan Shouye is incompetent, but the crowd doesn't, and watching them slowly realize it while Lin Dan maintains perfect composure was so satisfying. The only thing that bothers me is the cliffhanger with the old woman showing up at the inn. Just when you think Lin Dan has won, the author pulls the rug out again. Classic escalation. But I'll admit, I was already flipping pages wondering what else this woman could possibly throw at them.
I need to talk about Yao Chengcheng because this girl is genuinely one of the most well-written protagonists I've read in a while. Like, she's not just a food machine with a system. She has actual moral compass. Remember when she found out the imperial physicians said the Prince's legs can't be cured? Most people would've just kept their heads down and stayed quiet. But Yao Chengcheng literally blurts out "They're talking nonsense!" in front of everyone. Then she has to backtrack and pretend it was just encouragement. But the thing is—she MEANT it. She genuinely believes he'll recover because she's read the book. That's not calculated. That's empathy. And then she goes back and makes egg tarts. Not because the system told her to. Not because it earns points. But because "when the heart is bitter, it's best to eat something sweet." She's thinking about HIS feelings, not her survival. That's the kind of character moment that makes you immediately root for someone. Fu Yuanzheng on the other hand—oh man. The guy is clearly suspicious of her. "If she had no ulterior motives, how could a person change so drastically in such a short time?" He's been through too much to trust easily. But here's the thing: he's also not cruel. He didn't punish her for using tribute tea. He joked about deducting her salary but then gave her 200 taels instead. He's testing her, yes, but he's also... I don't know, giving her chances? The dynamic between them is so much more interesting than your typical transmigration romance. He's not a cold, emotionless male lead who slowly warms up. He's a guy who's dealing with chronic pain, a disability he can't fix, and a political situation where everyone around him has an agenda. And she's this person who seems to have no agenda at all—except maybe the agenda of making him the best-fed prince in history. Also Chef Kong is such a fun rival character. The way she sneered when Yao Chengcheng used tribute tea but then got absolutely destroyed by her cooking skills? Comedy gold.
