Superb plot
I have to appreciate the setting choices here because the Imperial Blue Hotel is doing a lot of heavy lifting. It's not just a backdrop — it's basically a character in its own right. The raw stone auction, the private rooms, the bar where Ji Rou accidentally makes her entrance... all of it paints this picture of a world where wealth and power are displayed through physical spaces. The contrast between the Nalan family's formal, gilded invitation and the back kitchen where Wu Xiaomei is miserably washing dishes is honestly brilliant worldbuilding. You've got the jade tycoons and rich heirs in one wing of the hotel, and in another, a betrayed friend scrubbing plates under the watch of a dim-witted guard. The same building, completely different worlds. And Shen Xingbai's golden eyes flashing when he holds that invitation — that visual detail stuck with me. It's a small thing but it makes him feel almost otherworldly, like he's operating on a different level than everyone else in the room. The author doesn't spend a lot of time on description, but when they do, it's purposeful. The hotel scenes feel cinematic, like you can practically see the camera panning across the marble floors and gold-embossed invitations.
