This scene is so brief but it paints such a vivid picture of a world I want to explore more. The context clues are everywhere if you know how to read them. Someone is going out with friends in the evening—there's a social gathering happening, or about to happen. It's likely dusk or early night given that someone needs to be escorted home afterward. The sister-in-law is presumably at or near the speaker's location, and 'home' implies a distance that makes walking together necessary. I keep imagining the physical space: maybe a courtyard, maybe a hallway, maybe a doorway where this conversation is happening. Qingli nodding suggests they're close to the speaker, in the same room or just outside it. The sister-in-law might be nearby too, or she might be elsewhere in the house, waiting to be fetched. The text doesn't describe any of this, but my brain is filling in the details because the scene demands it. What I love about the worldbuilding here is how much is communicated through social structure rather than physical description. We don't need to know what the rooms look like or what the city is called—we understand the world through the relationships and obligations between people. The fact that there's a 'sister-in-law' in the picture tells us about family structure, possibly marriage alliances, possibly a household where extended family lives together or nearby. The social world implied here feels dense and layered. There are expectations about who does what, who goes where, who takes care of whom. Qingli's role in this world is clear: they are the one who makes sure things happen, who ensures people get where they need to go, who absorbs the extra responsibility so others can have their fun. I want to know what Qingli's room looks like. I want to know what's waiting for them at home, or if home is even a place they're going back to tonight.
