Zhou Chengye, a middle school teacher, transmigrates into the body of a villainous supporting character in the novel "Kind and Delicate is a Charmer." Upon waking in a hospital bed, she finds herself married to Mu Yunyao, a stern soldier, and caring for a young boy named Zhou He An, whom the original owner had picked up from the mountains. The original owner had shamelessly clung to Mu Yunyao to secure a place in the wealthy Mu family, but after being denied a job at the family's cannery in favor of the novel's heroine, Shen Qingli, she caused a scene and was subsequently hit by a car. Now inhabiting this body, Zhou Chengye immediately recognizes the danger of her situation and the toxic dynamics of the Mu family, where all three sons harbor feelings for Shen Qingli, leading to eventual familial estrangement in the original plot.
Mu Yunyao arrives at the hospital, furious about the public disturbance and the threat to report his family for tax evasion. He demands a divorce to teach her a lesson about boundaries. However, Zhou Chengye, eager to escape the drama and avoid becoming part of the love triangle, readily agrees to the divorce. This unexpected compliance confuses Mu Yunyao, who is accustomed to her desperate pleas and tantrums. He suspects a head injury but ultimately decides to keep her hospitalized for observation, refusing to finalize the divorce until she recovers, citing her lack of financial independence as a practical concern. Meanwhile, Mu Yunyao receives urgent orders for a military mission and departs, leaving Zhou Chengye in the hospital with a hired caretaker, Sister Wang.
Shen Qingli visits, tearfully accusing Zhou Chengye of reporting her to the factory leaders, an act that nearly cost her the job. Zhou Chengye denies the accusation and subtly hints that Li Lanping, Shen Qingli's close friend, is the true culprit. Using her knowledge of the novel's plot, she correctly identifies Li Lanping's jealousy and hidden motives. Shen Qingli investigates and confirms Zhou Chengye's suspicions, leading to a rift between her and Li Lanping. Shen Qingli apologizes to Zhou Chengye for her initial hostility, and their relationship begins to thaw, much to the confusion and suspicion of Mu Xunran, the third son, who witnesses the sudden change in dynamics.
Li Lanping confronts Zhou Chengye at the hospital, demanding she stop sowing discord. Zhou Chengye stands her ground, refusing to be intimidated. As Zhou Chengye prepares for discharge, Shen Qingli offers to help her return home, despite Mu Xunran's sarcastic warnings that Zhou Chengye is manipulating Shen Qingli's kindness. Zhou Chengye accepts the offer, partly to escape the boredom of the hospital and partly to test the waters of her new environment. She maintains a polite but distant demeanor, focusing on her goal of securing employment and financial stability for herself and Zhou He An. The story follows her navigation of these complex family relationships as she seeks to carve out an independent life, away from the romantic entanglements that define the original narrative.
