I have to talk about how each character sounds because the dialogue here is remarkably distinct and I want to break down why. Third Master's voice is the standout. He speaks in this soft, measured way—"His voice was soft, like the smoke from an incense burner, ready to dissipate at any moment." And that's literally how he talks throughout the chapter. He never raises his voice. He never demands. He suggests. He ponders. He says things like "I was thinking…" and "That way… it would be good." As if he's not proposing that his young widow daughter-in-law bear another man's child to continue his family line. The gap between his gentle delivery and the cold calculation of his words is terrifying. And brilliant. The author uses this consistently—Third Master is never loud, never aggressive, but everything he says is a move in a strategy. Third Madam's voice, by contrast, is all emotion and naivety. "I thought you genuinely wanted to arrange a marriage for Wu Niang." Simple. Direct. She says what she thinks, and Third Master's internal response—"Naive. This was Third Master's lifelong assessment of Third Madam"—tells us everything about their dynamic without a word of dialogue. Pei Xu is the most controlled voice of all. Almost nothing gets past him. When he delivers the news about the pregnancy, he does it with this flat, factual tone: "Before I left the capital, Her Ladyship was already diagnosed with a pregnancy." No emotion. No hesitation. Just information. And yet, the text tells us his left hand clenched beneath his sleeve. His body betrays what his voice refuses to show. The dialogue between Third Master and Pei Xu during the Go game is particularly sharp because they're never saying what they mean. They talk about poetry competitions and ancestral worship while discussing treason and political marriage. The subtext is the real conversation.
