There's something really interesting happening with Wang Tiezhu's magic trick that I can't stop thinking about. He pulls a sparrow out of thin air and the kids are mesmerized. The master-disciple relationship is being redefined. Wang Tiezhu isn't just a freeloader, he's someone bringing wonder and magic into these children's lives. The sparrow disappearing into the mountains feels symbolic—freedom, possibility, the unknown. Meanwhile Ye Qingyun is grounded in practical survival, working the fields, feeding her kids, managing relationships. These two approaches to life existing side by side in the same household is fascinating. The story seems to be asking: what do we pass on to the next generation? Practical skills? Or wonder? Maybe both. The fact that the children cling to Wang Tiezhu's legs begging for more magic while their mother cooks dinner suggests the answer might be more complex than either/or.

The story was mostly good. There were some unexpected fascinating plot twists. I’m not crazy about how the author wrapped up the last chapter, it felt rushed where everything else was a lot more detailed. The translation was very rough, but a fair story of you can get through that.
