Really good story, keeps you wanting more
Okay so I have to talk about the living space in this book because it's honestly one of the most vividly rendered settings I've encountered in recent reads. The Ode to Joy apartments—specifically unit 2202—feel so real I could walk through them. Fan Shengmei's corner of the living room, shoved to one side with her filming setup, the ring light, the phone positioned just right... I could picture it perfectly. And the contrast between her cramped "room" (which is really just a converted living space) and the rest of the apartment tells you everything about her situation without the author having to spell it out. The dinner scene at the restaurant is another gem. Andy ordering pasta and salad, Guan Ju'er getting pasta and mushroom soup, and Shengmei with just a plain green salad so bare it looked almost pitiful—that single detail about the salad does so much heavy lifting. It tells us about her discipline, her priorities, her willingness to sacrifice comfort for goals. And then later when she's editing videos in the living room at night, the apartment transforms from a shared living space into her personal studio. The quiet so intense you could hear a pin drop because her roommates are respecting her hustle—that's worldbuilding through behavior, not description. Even Qu Xiaoxiao leaning against the doorframe, lounging casually while chatting with Yingying, paints a picture of class and attitude through posture and space. The elevator encounters, the hallway dynamics, the way characters occupy different areas of the apartment based on their personalities and relationships—it all feels lived-in. This isn't a backdrop; it's a living ecosystem.
