Great book with an interesting premise, last chapter so far is such a cliffhanger and can’t wait for more :)
The apartment description in Chapter 4 is one of those moments where the author doesn't need to say anything about the plot because the setting tells the whole story. Emerald Bay Residence—60,000 yuan per square meter, 120 square meters, 800,000 yuan down payment that Su Jinxiu paid every cent of. When she walks in, the motion-activated light flickers on and we get this tour of everything her daughter has that she never did. Luxury handbags—Hermès Birkin, Chanel Gabrielle, Dior Saddle Bag—tossed across the sofa "as casually as cheap market bags." Half a glass of unfinished red wine. An opened box of Godiva chocolates. The refrigerator packed with Australian Wagyu, French foie gras, Japanese Aomori apples, New Zealand cherries. And then the walk-in closet that used to be a guest bedroom, three walls of custom-built wardrobes overflowing with designer clothing, sorted by color, with unopened delivery boxes on the floor. Everything neatly arranged. Everything paid for with money that Su Jinxiu earned while Liu Wanqing stole her daughter's heart. The lighting in this scene is also doing so much work—Su Jinxiu sits on the sofa without turning on the lights, and as dusk filters through the floor-to-ceiling windows, her figure disappears into the gathering shadows. She's literally becoming invisible in her daughter's space. Then at 6:47, the key turns, the hallway light comes on, and the clicking of high heels echoes through the apartment. The contrast between the warm yellow floor lamp illuminating Su Jinxiu's graying, haggard face and the cold luxury surrounding her is devastating. This isn't just a rich girl's apartment—it's a museum of everything a mother gave and everything she received in return.
The translation up until this point has been quite commendable,促使我决定阅读原著...然而，小说的内容逐渐变得平淡无奇，充斥着老套的情节和缺乏深度的角色塑造。角色的性格随每一章情节的推进而随意改变，仅仅是为了迎合当前的故事线，没有人物的成长或内在发展。作者仿佛在不断推翻自己之前设定，无论是智商、性格特征还是能力，只有主角炼金术士因为出场较少而显得相对稳定。主角的同伴时而机智精明，时而又愚蠢得令人质疑他们是否是同一个角色；接着又变成恋爱脑，毫无缘由地陷入情感纠葛；下一刻又突然展现出堪比主角的天才能力。
主角自己的性格转变也令人困惑：从冷酷无情到与敌人和解，只凭一句“对不起”和微笑就能释怀（即使敌人的行为比前一章恶劣得多）；然后在另一章又变成精打细算的贫穷孩子，为了救朋友甚至不惜送出连自己都买不起的珍贵物品，最后却轻描淡写地说：“算了吧，这东西在这个地方没人能买得起。”结果反派主角却安然无恙，丝毫不感激那可能救他一命的昂贵物品。接下来的章节中，主角对身边人的一点小错误就勃然大怒，要求全额赔偿，这种毫无逻辑的性格跳跃在每个篇章中不断上演。
总结来说，作者似乎已经黔驴技穷，无法创造新的角色和故事。而且，最近的原文章节里，甚至连主角间的浪漫关系都没有开始展开。作者似乎已经忘记了如何塑造连贯的人物和情节。
