The dialogue throughout is so natural and distinct. Prince Gongqing barely says two words but when he does—'Who sent you here?'—you feel the weight of it. His voice is cold, suspicious, dangerous. Meanwhile Wushuang's voice is all panic and defiance, switching between trembling fear and sudden bursts of courage. When she bites his arm to escape, that's not dialogue, that's ACTION, and it says everything. Then there's Zhang Ruyan's conversation with Ye Yuwu at the bookstore. The way she stammers through her explanation—'Shopkeeper Ye, to be honest, this is the first time a story I've written has been recognized...'—her voice is so different from Wushuang's. Shy, grateful, almost tearful. You can hear the decades of rejection and disappointment in every word. And Ye Yuwu's responses are perfect. Warm, perceptive, but never pitying. 'We can be considered friends now. As fellow women, I understand the difficulties you face.' That line hit different. The author gives every character a distinct voice and I'm not even mad about it.
