The Beta and I was so far my heart break book. This was the first book I’ve read from author Cass and then I fell in love with all the characters and I knew I needed to read all the books. Thank you for a beautiful story. Can’t wait for more!
The stakes here are layered and real. On the surface: bullying, reputation, forced marriage. But dig deeper and it's about autonomy, family loyalty, and survival in a world that wants to consume you. Bai Banxia's conflict is both external and internal. Externally, she's fighting village bullies, a toxic grandmother, a matchmaker, and a marriage to a violent widower. Internally, she's reconciling her cold scientific mind with the emotional memories of a girl who was broken by the world. What makes the stakes feel urgent is that every conflict is interconnected. The bullying damages her reputation, which makes the forced marriage more likely, which isolates her further. It's a cascade of threats, and the author makes you feel each one. The widower Wang Han is particularly terrifying because he's not a cartoon villain—he's a real threat with a track record. A man who beat his first wife to death? That's not just bad marriage material, that's a death sentence. The stakes aren't abstract; they're visceral. And the system—while a potential escape hatch—comes with restrictions that keep the tension alive. She's not saved yet. She's just armed.
Mated to your sibling? Is this for real? Lol I haven’t read it yet but I don’t think I wanna

Sometimes I wonder where all your ideas come from. You continue amazing and enchanting is with your unlimited talent of storytelling.
No ending where’s the rest of the story
OMG it’s been a long time since I’ve read a book that I was emotionally invested in! It was incredible! I went from happy, to sad, to furious to excited to crying. I hated them & loved them, rooted for them & cursed them for being so stupid!! I only hope book 2 is at least half as good as this one!!
