This story sounds similar to the Defiant Mate by Jennifer Francis except instead of a lawyer like in Defiant mate she’s a doctor. I hope it is different.

The warlock one suffers from chinese authors counting problems. Where the distance between cities is measured in earth diameters and the armies guarding a city have the same numbers as earth population while the city has the number of people of a medium village.
