I need to talk about Madame Ding because this woman is genuinely terrifying and I love how the author wrote her. Let me paint you a picture: she sends Song Zhimian fabric to make undergarments for the man she's being sold to, all while smiling and calling her "young lady." She's the kind of stepmother who weaponizes kindness. "Madame… is truly too much!" Cuiguo says, and honestly, same, Cuiguo, same. But the real gem here is the interaction between Song Zhimian and Song Zhiqing at the end. Zhiqing brings pastries to their father right after Song Zhimian is told she must marry, and she leans in to whisper—this smug, little snake—"Eldest Sister is truly fortunate! Father has arranged for you to become a general's wife!" And Song Zhimian's response? She pinches Zhiqing's cheek and says "Then I wish you success in achieving your heart's desire!" The subtext is absolutely vicious. She's basically saying: you want this fate? Good luck with that. What's fascinating is how Song Zhimian's relationship with her father Song Kaishan has shifted. He sees her as a transaction—"Once the Gengtie has been exchanged, she's considered betrothed"—and she's finally stopped pretending otherwise. Her threat to slit her throat on the wedding day or poison Deputy General Wu on the wedding night isn't just dramatic; it's the first time she's held up a mirror to exactly what they're doing to her. And it works. Song Kaishan gets angry, yes, but he also backs off. She's found her leverage: her own life is the one thing they can't afford to lose. And Cuiguo—poor, loyal Cuiguo, who wants to run away with her and survive in some quiet countryside town. Their bond feels real and unforced, which makes the whole situation hurt even more.

I like the story so much. The plot is direct though. One can easily predict what's next. I like the heart of this guy Zayn. He can easily hide his happiness and endure torture, bullying and humiliation in the name of love. Love for a complacent woman.
