Can we just take a moment to appreciate how funny this narration is? 'Why do male leads these days all seem a bit abnormal?' — that's the kind of line that makes you snort out loud in the middle of a mass grave. The author has given Lu Dantao this incredibly modern, self-aware voice that constantly breaks the fourth wall without actually breaking it. She's trapped in a 'dog-blood political intrigue novel' and she knows it. She references 'Long Aotian' tropes like it's common knowledge. This is a character who reads her own genre. Her dialogue with the physician is also gold. She's desperately trying to sell the 'worried sister' act while internally panicking about money, and the physician clearly sees through it but plays along anyway. The exchange where she pats her bulging money pouch and then immediately regrets looking like she's showing off — 'That's not what I meant… anyway, my brother is very important to me' — this is natural, slightly awkward, very human. The bandits' dialogue is more functional but effective. 'Officials and bandits, officials and bandits. That's what happens when we're the ones bringing up the rear.' There's worldbuilding in three lines. The author knows how to make even background characters sound like they have opinions about the political system. What I love most is the tonal balance. The narration can be deadpan funny one paragraph and genuinely eerie the next — like when Lu Dantao first sees the male protagonist's face and the text shifts to describing his 'lifeless pallor, as if he would shatter at a touch.' The voice adapts to the scene instead of staying in one register.

I feel this author has serious potential but unfortunately I can't get with the bs cheating mate bond excuse. Then u drag kids into to make it so they def have find a way back together. then the mate bond in this book is complete bs. even the beta cheating and this most be the norm for that pack smh
