I need to talk about Chen Miaomiao's voice because this girl has DELIVERED some absolutely iconic lines and I am here for it. The first one that made me spit out my tea: 'Shouldn't you apologize before asking questions? You nearly injured someone.' She just got ambushed by a group of cultivators who were about to kill her and her response is basically 'where's my apology?' The sheer audacity. I was wheezing. And then when Li Cun threatens her and she just casually says 'Little one, you seem rather frail. Have you eaten today? Without putting in some effort, I'm afraid you won't even be able to scratch Benzun's skin.' BENZUN. She's calling herself Benzun in front of these people who think she's a mortal. The confidence is unmatched. But my absolute favorite has to be when she tells Li Cun he doesn't qualify to be her stool: 'After all, Benzun is quite picky. Even a stool must be of the finest quality, and a lackey like you likely doesn't qualify.' She took his threat about kneeling and turned it into a compliment to herself while simultaneously insulting him. That is a masterclass in verbal combat. The narrative voice itself is also really fun — it has this dry, almost sarcastic undertone that matches Chen Miaomiao's personality. Like when she plays dead and then sits up and goes 'Phew, good thing this young lady was smart enough to play dead in time—almost lost my life there.' The self-reference as 'this young lady' while literally almost dying is comedy gold. And the contrast between the Xiushi's formal, almost archaic speech patterns and Chen Miaomiao's sharp, modern-sounding retorts creates this really nice dynamic. Their dialogue literally represents the clash between the old cultivated world and this new person who doesn't play by their rules.
I absolutely loved and enjoyed this book.
