Even though Delilah got on my nerves, I really loved this story! And I loved learning more about Lorenzo! He’s one of my faves!
I know everyone's going to talk about the plot twists and the scheming and the demonic arrows and all that, but I need to talk about the quiet beats because those are the ones that actually stick with me. There's this moment when Lian Qiao nearly crashes into Lu Wujiu's arms after Taotie makes her dodge, and her heart is still pounding. She says "Move aside. I absolutely must teach it a lesson today" but the physical proximity, the moment of almost-colliding—it's one of those things the author doesn't even highlight but I noticed immediately. These two have this history, this physical comfort with each other that speaks volumes without any romantic dialogue. And then there's Xie Mingran's death. I know he's a minor character and I know he stole a Gu and lied to Lian Qiao, but watching him die clutching her sleeve with "unwillingness, yet unable to utter a word"—that image is going to haunt me. He had so much to say and now he never will. Lian Qiao's desperation as she tries to save him, the futility of it, the way she immediately pivots to chasing the arrow's origin instead of just standing there—it shows everything about her character in one beat. The friendship between Lian Qiao and Lu Wujiu is written with this incredible subtlety. They bicker like siblings. They cover for each other. He casts a Silence Curse to protect her from having to announce they fell for a Love Gu. She notices when his sword ornament goes missing and immediately connects it to the Taotie being sent out. They don't need to say "I trust you" because they've already proven it a dozen times over. What really got me was the ending of this section—the wilderness stretching vast, the river clear, the moon near, and not a single trace of the attacker. There's this loneliness to the scene that contrasts sharply with all the scheming and plotting. Two people, a dead third, and an enemy who's already vanished into the dark. It's atmospheric in a way that makes the emotional stakes feel real and immediate.
brilliant book so far
This book would be a solid 4 stars for me except for one thing... it changed characters, plot, setting, everything after the first half or so. I was just getting I to the Olympian drama when *POOF* a while new cast of characters, location, etc were introduced.
Why do they always make the female characters so weak and pathetic. She should tell them all to go f**k themselves. I hope she doesn't end up with that POS Alpha. I hope she finds someone else and Elliott dies a painful death.
Such a good story
I am loving this book! A lot of tension and the situation the find themselves is so steamy. Their relationship is HOTTTT! I also love the depth of their characters—there’s a lot going on below the surface of appearances..
