I need to talk about Lu Yun because THIS man is so underrated and I have feelings about it. The moment he ran his hand over that moon-white zhiduo embroidered with silver ruyi motifs, I literally gasped. Not because it was romantic — though it totally was — but because it was the first time we really saw him as a person instead of just 'the Fourth Young Master who went back to academy three days after the wedding.' The author gave us this entire interior life in a single gesture. And his reaction to the food! He ate several bites of that pastry and fell into deep thought. That's not just about food, readers. That's a man realizing he's been completely misjudging the woman he married. The aqua-blue robe with the bamboo embroidery — 'the stalks seeming to embody unyielding integrity' — that's basically Jiang Lingyuan's personality sewn into fabric and sent to him. She knows what he values. She knows HIM. Meanwhile, Nanny Jin is over here thinking Jiang Lingyuan is just a 'penniless country bumpkin' with no real understanding. The dramatic irony is SO thick I could cut it with a knife. We know Jiang Lingyuan is the one actually running things while Nanny Jin thinks she's the power behind the throne. The relationship between Jiang Lingyuan and Nanny Rong is also quietly beautiful. Nanny Rong is basically the only adult in the room, and she sees everything clearly. When she thinks about how it was Lu Yun who should be thanking his ancestors, not the other way around? That's the narrative telling us exactly where the moral center of this story lies.
