I’m loving the story so far. Only 23 chapters in and I haven’t decided if I like Killian yet. He is definitely frustrating and I want Natalie to meet her wolf already.

this is my favorite book on this site so far it is the only one that I have read from start to finish I eould love to read a sequel about Darcy and Stephen's pups please let me know if you do write that story and I will definitely read it from start to finish as well.

There's this one passage where Su He is walking deeper into the mountains and the author describes her perception expanding: 'Withered grass, shrubs, wild vines, medicinal herbs... They flickered faintly in her consciousness like stars in the night sky.' I keep coming back to this image. The way the barren landscape transforms in her mind—from dead brown terrain into a constellation of green lights—this is such a vivid way to show a supernatural ability without explaining it mechanically. She doesn't have a HUD or a skill tree. She just sees the world differently. And the contrast between the outside world and her inner perception is gorgeous. The text says 'the surrounding trees were noticeably taller, the dead grass was thicker than on the outside, and even the light had dimmed' when she reaches the deep mountains. You can feel the atmosphere shifting. It goes from open and bright to enclosed and shadowy, and that's when the tension hits—she realizes she's gone too far. The author also nails the village scene under the scholar tree. The crowd of women and older children, 'standing together in small groups of twos and threes, laughing and chatting merrily,' while Liu Cuihua stands in the center like a peacock. The visual of her wearing a blue cloth coat she'd 'kept packed away at the bottom of her chest'—that detail tells you everything about this woman's priorities and her relationship with her status. She saves her best clothes for moments when she can perform. The world feels lived-in because every object and setting has a purpose beyond decoration.

great book and the first in the series. i started out of order by reading #3 first. i don't recommend it, but it would just enhance the stories to read them in order. that said, the plot is exciting, and the characters are interesting. they are mafia novels with HEA's.
