Nice but very pricey
The imagery in this chapter is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Let me start with the space upgrade scene because it's genuinely beautiful. The 2,000 cubic meter space with storage shelves stretching 'high into the sky,' a winding path, and at the end of it - a shallow stream with faint blue glow, crystal clear water that seems to have neither source nor end. Mo Fei drinks it and feels 'as though she had never experienced such complete refreshment in her entire life.' There's something almost sacred about this description. It's not just a water supply - it's a symbol of renewal, of something pure in a world that's about to get a lot less pure with all these disasters coming. Then we cut to the parents' home and the contrast is stark. The old residential complex with corridors covered in small advertisements, a broken entrance door, no lift, broken stairwell lights, trash piled in corners, spider webs. This is the reality of aging in China - these buildings are falling apart. But inside, the wall of certificates tells a completely different story. The meticulous reattachment, the careful smoothing of every edge - that's love expressed through labor, through the things people do when they don't know how to say the words. The heat is another environmental detail that keeps appearing. May weather that feels unbearable, Song Yi drenched in sweat, the air conditioner that Mo Zhicheng quietly turns on when his daughter arrives. The heat is oppressive, almost apocalyptic - and it's foreshadowing. Because the disasters are coming, and this kind of extreme weather is just the beginning. The setting isn't just background; it's actively building dread.
