I have to talk about the hand root reveal because it genuinely made me laugh out loud. The way Yu Yan casually drops that this common, hated plant is actually ginger—and that it removes fishiness—is such a satisfying little plot beat. It's the kind of moment where the reader goes "ohhhhh" and the characters go "wait, WHAT?" simultaneously. Cang Feng's reaction was perfect: he's been using hand root to ward off cold his whole life and never once thought about putting it IN food. That's the beauty of this story's plot construction—Yu Yan's modern knowledge creates these small but meaningful revolutions in this world. And then the cooking demonstration scene! Xin Yu and Shuo Xing showing up at dawn just to learn the recipe? That's not just world-building, that's plot momentum. The author sets up this whole sequence where Yu Yan first impresses Cang Feng and Lan Xiu, then word spreads, and now an entire new character (Xin Yu) is invested in learning from him. It's a classic ripple effect—small acts of competence creating expanding influence. The fact that Shuo Xing immediately volunteers to fetch water and start helping shows how quickly Yu Yan is being welcomed into the community fabric. Also, can we talk about the blanching revelation? Yu Yan explaining that wild vegetables contain oxalic acid, nitrites, and alkaloids—things he learned from treating patients in the ER—is such a clever integration of his past life into the present plot. It's not just cooking tips; it's literally life-saving knowledge disguised as kitchen advice. The author is building this slow-burn sense that Yu Yan is going to transform this tribe's entire way of life, one practical discovery at a time. And the fact that he's careful about not revealing too much about his origins? That's a plot thread I'm watching closely. How long can he keep that secret?
I like the intro to this story
Cute little story.
