What makes the conflict so gripping is that it's layered. On the surface, it's a divorce battle — but underneath, there's the secret investigation Lu Yuchuan is running, the enemy operatives who might be connected to her kidnapping, and the political stakes of the color picture tube project. The author doesn't let us forget that this woman's personal survival is tangled up in something much bigger. The scene where Xu Zhizhi says "I've already died twice. I don't have enough luck to die a third time" — that's the emotional core of the entire conflict. This isn't about pride or stubbornness. This is about staying alive. And the fact that Liu Dawei won't even acknowledge the severity? "You're angry now. Calm down first" — he's treating her near-death experience like a mood. The rumors spreading about her having an affair? That's the community turning against her before she's even had a chance to defend herself. The stakes keep rising and there's no safety net anywhere. But she's still standing. That's what makes this story so compelling — every chapter feels like she's one step away from falling, but she keeps finding another way to climb back up.
I need to pause and talk about the one moment in this whole chapter that genuinely caught me off guard. Not the political maneuvering, not the ginseng gifts, not the Emperor's bizarre policy — but this: Fu Lingxi looking at those chests and thinking, with actual warmth, that Fu Chu-shi is definitely her biological mother. [Seeing this dowry, Fu Lingxi finally believed one thing: Fu Chu-shi was definitely her biological mother!] That's it. That's the whole emotional payload. All this wealth, all this effort, thirty-six nanmu chests filled with the finest silks and jewels, and what it proves isn't power or status — it's love. A mother who remembered her daughter. A mother who planned this. The original owner might have been raised with harsh nannies and malice from Madam Qi, but somewhere underneath all that, there was a legal mother who cared enough to send this. And then immediately after, Fu Lingxi brushes it off with a nonchalant smile and says she has no expectations of anyone from the Duke's manor. The emotional whiplash is real. I'm already emotionally invested in this mother-daughter relationship and they haven't even met yet.

Very helpful, helps visualizing the events that take place in the bookThe main plot point atp, though engaging, arrives unexpectedly leaving some of my questions unanswered. I like the Leo Skyshard better in this novel he's not as arrogant or showoffy as in the first novel. Even tho I didn't finish the first one because of the constant change of viewpoints and the fact that Leo was way too secretive about his identity even to his family plus his arrogance and stuff like that
