The sensory details in this novel are INSANE. Let me paint you a picture: animal hides hanging under the roof, a wooden basin being filled with water, plant ash used for washing clothes because there's no detergent, the repeated 'clack clack' of flint striking tinder, wild vegetable dough soup for lunch, the creak of a small wooden bed. Every single detail grounds you in this time period so completely. One scene that stuck with me is Jiang Wangchuan washing her clothes in the yard. Here's this huge man—at least six feet three inches tall—sitting on a stone, carefully scrubbing her tiny dirty garments. The contrast between his size and the tenderness of the action is so visually striking. It's basically a painting. I could see it in my head like a movie scene. The village itself feels alive too. Wenhe Village has only forty households, so there are no secrets. Women washing clothes by the river tease him about his 'new wife.' A clothing shop owner buys his hides. The gossip network is basically the internet of this era, and it's so charmingly depicted. The most vivid image for me though is the ending scene—darkness falling, no candles for most villagers, the thin blanket between them, the warmth radiating from his body. It's intimate without being explicit, simple without being boring. The author has a gift for making poverty feel warm and romantic without romanticizing hardship. These people are struggling, but they're building something together, and the world around them feels lived-in and real.
