Let me just start by saying: the stakes in these chapters are absolutely massive, and the author never once spells them out directly. That's what makes it so good. On the surface, it's about an emperor who won't pick an empress. But underneath? The entire political structure of Great Ning is trembling. The officials have been united for four years on this one demand because they understand something Xiao Yun doesn't want to admit: without an heir, the succession is unstable. Without an empress, the court factions will keep fighting over influence. And Xiao Yun knows this—he's not being stubborn, he's being strategic. The moment he says "Look at all of you! What are you leaving these misfits for me?!" the stakes shift. It's no longer just about marriage; it's about competence, loyalty, and who gets to serve in his government. He's essentially saying: you can't even pick a wife for me, how can I trust you with actual governance? Then there's the examination subplot, and the stakes here are even more personal. Corrupt officials accepting bribes, the Vice Minister of Personnel involved, the Chancellor privately mentoring a candidate—this is a system that's rotting from the inside, and Xiao Yun is watching it all while sitting in a teahouse, sipping tea he can't even name. The fact that he's aware but not yet acting? That's tension you can cut with a knife. And the biggest conflict of all: Xiao Yun vs. himself. He says "I am not an unreasonable person" but his entire demeanor suggests he's anything but reasonable. He's trapped between being a good emperor and being his own man, and the text makes you feel every ounce of that internal pressure.
