Okay so let me just say—Jin Chenyue's assistant Li Yang is literally the most insufferable person in this entire novel and I have strong opinions about him. The man hears it's late at night, some woman calls about the young mistress, and his immediate assumption is: 'another gold-digger trying to get close to Young Master Jin.' He's out here mentally writing her resignation letter before she even hangs up! And then Jin Chenyue literally says 'You might as well write your resignation letter' when Li Yang suggests not calling her back. The man's loyalty is impressive but his judgment is... questionable at best. But the real character moment for me is Lian Caige. She's the only friend Gu Anyun has in Beicheng, and the way she calls at 2 AM—worried, not scheming—shows she genuinely cares. When she breaks her paintbrush upon hearing about the amnesia, that detail hit me hard. It's such a small, specific thing that tells us everything about how much she loves her friend. And Jin Chenyue? The fact that he was willing to thank Lian Caige on Gu Anyun's behalf, that he said 'Anyun trusts you deeply and I'm grateful you haven't betrayed that trust'—this man is so emotionally constipated but he clearly cares more than he lets on. The irony is brutal.
Thought-provoking scenes!
