The banquet scene is emotionally devastating on its own—Xia Zhi being forced to sit in the wrong place, Pei Yuhuan choosing to stay seated instead of chasing her, Mrs. Pei's cold manipulation. It's the kind of scene where you feel your blood pressure rising just watching it. But then Pei Yuexuan appears, and suddenly the whole emotional temperature shifts. He doesn't make a scene. He doesn't publicly defy his family. But he takes her clutch, puts her hand on his arm, and leads her to the main table like it's the most natural thing in the world. And then—here's the detail that wrecked me—he sits close to her but doesn't speak a single word during the entire banquet. He just quietly passes her water, shields her from passing waiters, and watches her when she's not looking. Bai Jiyue captures this moment in a photo and sends it with the caption 'Aren't they a perfect match?' and Xia Zhi replies 'Nonsense' but we ALL know. Then the cherry on top: after everyone leaves, Pei Yuexuan picks up the half-finished glass of white wine Xia Zhi left behind and drinks it all in one go. ONE GO. As if he needed to taste what she tasted, or feel what she felt, or just have something of hers close to him. Bai Jiyue immediately renames him 'Secretly Thrilled Brother' and I cannot blame her. The tension between these two is electric. It's not in grand declarations or dramatic confessions—it's in pocket squares, in shared glances, in the way he watches her look at flowers. This is the kind of slow-burn romance that makes you want to shake the characters and yell at them, but also makes you never want the story to end.
