Okay let me just say it straight up: Old Madam Nie is one of the most terrifying antagonists I've encountered in this genre, and she hasn't even appeared on page yet. Qinghe's internal monologue when she pictures her grandmother — "a woman with a pale face, a pointed chin, high cheekbones, and thin lips. Her eyelids drooped, and her forehead was balding. Though short and stout, she was terrifyingly nimble, constantly on the move, wailing and causing a scene" — this is a character sketch that could stand alone as horror fiction. The fact that this is someone's grandmother and not a monster from a nightmare says everything about this family's dynamics. The stakes here are devastatingly clear. The family sold more than half their hundred-acre estate to fund the fourth uncle's education — an education that produced absolutely nothing. Twenty years of extraction, and for what? The parents devised a plan to divide the household, and Nie Erzhuang (the father) was basically cast out at seventeen with "a single thin quilt, five coarse flour cakes, two sets of patched clothes, and a few pairs of straw sandals. In all but name, he was cast out empty-handed." And then Old Madam Nie demands his wages. His wages! After his master treated him better than his own mother ever did. The fact that Lady Liu's eyesight was ruined from embroidering during confinement and Old Madam Nie still thought they were hiding money? This is generational abuse at its most insidious. The current scene's tension — Qinghe trying to get Xiaoli educated against the family's wishes, Father Nie too broken to resist his mother's voice in his head, Mother Nie trapped between resentment and survival — this is all leading somewhere explosive. And I am HERE for it.
